Hello everyone,
I'm using Mandrake 8.1 and when I use "apm -s" to put my laptop in standby, I lose about 3% of battery power every 20 minutes. Is there anyway to make this amount smaller, like with a different command?

I know when I was running windows on my laptop I could hibernate it it would basically save its state and shut itself off completely, so less power was used. Is there anything like this in linux? Otherwise I need to actually halt it, and then boot it back up when I'm ready to use it again (which obviously also uses a lot of battery).. any suggestions?

Thank you!

You've reposted the same question due to nobody replying to the original post.

A quick Google search revealed these results (http://www.google.com/linux?site=search&restrict=linux&hl=en&q=advanced+power+management&btnG=Google+Search). There should be something there to help.

depending on what brand and model laptop you have, hibernate may be as simple as adding another partition and 15 min of tinkering, or it may be damn near impossible to figure out. I have a dell inspiron 8200 and so far i have not seen much promise for hibernate, although i'm sure it's possible since it really isn't that complicated a procedure
check out your bios stuff, you should be able to hotkey into it in some laptops, or just go into bios setup upon reboot. check for hotkeys to:
spin down hd
save to disk(gl with this one though)
etc etc
whatever you wanna cut that can be cut

also read the man's for apm and apmd
