Sounds like something on the HDD is not wanting to be erased when you removed the partitions....

There are utilities out there to write zeros to the HDD... It would remove partition tables as well as information on the drive...

I know that gateway has a utility called gwscan that could be downloaded off www.gateway.com (http://www.gateway.com) in their tech support area under Hard Drives I believe...

There are other utilites as well, but can't think of any at the moment.

You are probably getting LILILILILI

From the LILO README
LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map installer.

Mine did this till I upgraded LILO.

I don't see how the bootdisk can be doing the same thing though?? You need to make you a new bootdisk.

i think it could it be a MBR problem?
would format /mbr clear it up ?

That's 'fdisk /mbr' not format /mbr and probably wouldn't help in this situation.
