Hello everyone. I'd really like to use linux, but unless I solve these problems, it looks like I will be stuck with M$. Anyways, here it is:
I just installed Mandrake 8.1 on my machine which has a ISA Advansys SCSI card (for my CD-R), a generic ethernet adapter, and a USB mouse.
Right after the install, when I rebooted some bad things happened. Let me list them.
1.
SCSI 0: Advansys SCSI 3.3G: ISA PnP: IO 0x130-0x13F, IRQ 0xC, DMA 0x6
Advansys: advansys_reset: board 0: SCSI bus reset started
Advansys: advansys_reset: board 0: SCSI bus reset successful
SCSI device set offline - not ready or command retry failed after bus reset: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
This last line repeats except with id 1-6
2. Loading USB interface (usb-uhci) /lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/usb-uhci.o.gz: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
init_module: No such device
/lib/modules/../usb-uhci.o.gz: insmod /lib/modules/../usb-uhci.o.gz failed
/lib/modules/../usb-uhci.o.gz: insmod usb-uhci failed
3.
Bringing up interface eth0: Determining IP info for eth0 failed. I find the USB thing very odd, because during the install, I was able to use my USB mouse, but now after installation I cannot. I have an Abit board based on Intel 440ZX. And during the install, the USB components were detected. I also tried reinstalling ML to see if the same USB error came up. It did.
I have cable modem (road runner) which uses DHCP to the best of my knowledge. I was able to run Win2k previously without touching my network settings, so I assume I was using DHCP with Win2k. So, during the ML install, I chose to not specify an IP, turn on "get IP from server", and not specify a http/ftp proxy. Is it safe to assume that my ethernet card is working and that it's dhcp that is not? Hm..do I have to use socal.rr.com or something somewhere. Never had to do that with Win2k.
I can boot up fine and start x, but w/o mouse support or ethernet, it's pretty much useless.
