Does anyone use Evolution as their email client program? Do people recommend it? How difficult will it be to compile it on Slackware 8.0?

If Evolution is not recommended, what other x-windows imap compliant email client to people recommend?

Also what is the opionion of Balsa. I'm basically looking for an email client that uses mbx mail folders and is imap compliant.

Actually I use Evolution, love it, and it does come highly recommended by most, except those who are "anti-bloatware" as just like Outlook it's a fairly large program and is about an 11MB install I think for the basic program not counting required libraries and so on.
It's also a Ximian Gnome specific thing, so you either have to be running Ximian or have all the proper libraries installed to run it.

I love Evolution. The prettiest linux mail client I've found.

I recommended it, but I didn't compile, I got the debs from thier site.

I run KDE 2.2, but have GNOME and all of its libraries also installed so it should not be a problem right?

evolution has some nice stuff, but you can't tell it to leave the mails on the servers, which is why i don't use it.
kmail is  but still somewhat buggy...

I want to try it eventually. Right now I just use mozilla -mail, which works really well actually! It has all the options I need, it's powerful, and very stable now. If Evolution doens't work out try Mozilla's mail program. (mozilla -mail)

I'm using 0.9.7

I use Evo and love it. I also run KDE. I didn't mess with compiling it. I installed Ximian's RedCarpet auto-updater program and installed it through that (via RPM). It worked fine. I'm running Mdk 8.1 I'm not sure if RedCarpet supports Slack 8.

Honestly I don't know, but I wouldn't bank on it. Ximian's got some funky stuff in their version of Gnome...
I have talked to other KDE users who are running it just fine, but I think they downloaded libraries specifically from Ximian to do it.

I wouldn't recommend that. Ximian doesn't maintain their deb database very well. The dependency problems you'll have with them will be almost as numerous as the ones you'd have with RPMs. Packages are often out of date and yet other packages will require newer versions even though the newer versions aren't available yet.

For me, as long as I don't copy things to my local inbox it automatically stays on the server.
