Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : [SOLVED] Openoffice Ximian Spellcheck Not Working
Under Tools -> Options I have no available language modules. I have gtk2-spell, gtkspell, gnome-spell and aspell installed. I have 'spell' in my USE flags.
According to this thread on the Gentoo forums there's a script you can run: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=155362&highlight=
That ends with an error:
# /opt/Ximian-OpenOffice/install-dict
can't opendir /usr/lib/ooo-1.1/share/dict/ooo/:
No such file or directory at /opt/Ximian-OpenOffice/install-dict line 30.
I've emerged and unmerged it a few times. Abiword's spellcheck is working fine.

And the error message was correct?
Well there were two instances of:
$OOO_DIR = '/usr/lib/ooo-1.1';
that needed to be removed. The error was caused by my only changing one instance of that line. With both changes the script runs. Now I do have 'Available Language Modules' listed in Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Writing Aids. The spellchecker is still not working though.
I'm all by myself with this one?

How is "The spellchecker still not working"?
Not starting at all, or not recognizing misspelled words?
It doesn't autocorrect which is set to be on. When I press the the button to spellcheck it asks me if I want to continue the spell check at the beginning of document. Then it tells me that the spell check is complete without mentioning a single error.
Using this sentence as a test: teh spelclheck sux
Fixed - I'll post what the problem was a little later.

I hope you weren't simply trying to run the dicooo MACRO just like that:
For anybody who wants it, you just need the DicOOo _macro_ from OpenOffice.org (http://http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/dictionaries/dicooo/DicOOo.sxw) and then you CLICK IN THE DOCUMENT.
That means you need to open it with...
Ta-da! OpenOffice.org !!!
Then it lets you install all the stuff you want and it configures it to simply work... Easier, even, than a Microsoft install... :D
PS- Excuse the irony, but I thought this dictionary install was so well-made and clear that, well that everyone would think it was well-made and clear...
I had it set to use Canadian English yet don't have that language module. The script I mentioned above still needed to be run as it wouldn't work with any language before then. So for anyone who ends up looking at this thread because their spellchecker fails after an install start with the script in the Gentoo forums link above.
Rinias, I emerged it and it did not work. Obviously not that well made or clear if I have to run some obscure script for a core feature to work. A working spellchecker is a core feature for any word processor out of the box.
Whether this is a Portage problem or a Ximian-Office problem I do not know.

Yes, however... Was it "out of the box"? DId you pay for it? No, you emerged...
Not to be an a$$, but a quick look at the site would've helped you out. the dicooo file is a .svm file or something- the native OOo file format. That gives it away as something you need to open in OOo. Otherwise, was it listed in your "Available macros" section? Did you look there?
And you say that a working spellchecker is required for all word processors- does that mean that we need to make hundreds of different programs to incorporate all the languages? What do we do if I wanted the chinese spellchecker? Gentoo's free, emerge is free... Make the effort...

Thing is, everybody I know wants to use Linux, but then they check it out and it's stuff like a spellchecker which makes them turn around and say that Linux is crap, etc. It's there, and you have to look for it.
I shouldn't have taken that out on you however. For all I know, there was something weird going on, cause that's possible too.
My point was not a "RTFM". I hope it wasn't taken this way. :(
