My system does not have a floppy drive but I would like to create a rescue CD in case of an emergency. I notice there is a way to create a boot floppy but nothing about a boot cd. How would I go about creating one?

Thx.

Your install CD1 is usually a 'rescue CD' too. Just boot off that CD and select 'rescue' from the bootprompt.

If you really feel like doing some research, learning stuff and creating an optimized rescue CD for your system, do a search on the forum and on G4L. There are lots of howto's on creating bootable iso CD's.

In the case of a system unable to boot how do I proceed at the rescue prompt?

I tried help none of the commands seem relevant. The documentation talks about auto repair, manual repair etc but saw no reference to any of these from the rescue prompt?

For suse 9.1 and 9.2 (you did not say what verison you had)
you just put in cd 1 or the dvd, chose installation - chose your language and then it comes to installation mode: there you can choose between: 1 new installation
2 update a existing system
3 repair installed system
4 boot installed system

So you choose "3"

(i know it is a bit confusing to have to start a install to go to rescue mode),
Suses rescue system is the best one out there for a "newbee" that i am avere of its automatic repair goes over:
partition tables
swap partitions
file systems
entries in - /etc/fstab
boot loader configuration
package database

all this information is in the suse administration guide, so if you did a ftp install and do not have it im sure you can download it at suse.com
