I am getting ready to install Linux (RedHat) on one of two systems that I have. I'm 'stuck' with Redhat, because it's for a class that I'm starting in 1 1/2 weeks.
I have two options:
System 1:
AMD Duron 750
System 2:
Intel PIII 450 w/ SCSI CD ROM (I purchased this used and have no idea what kind of SCSI controller card is installed)
I am going to Dual boot Linux on the box I end up putting it on. Which system would be easier to put it on? If it's the AMD, how do I put it on an AMD chip? If it's the Intel, how do I configure the SCSI CD ROM?
Thanks.

why is red hat stuck?
nevermind,
the non-scsi system (ie duron) is the safe bet, just peruse the red hat compatibility list (http://hardware.redhat.com/redhatready/cgi-bin/us/db-hcl.cgi) to see if the other hardware that you don't mention is compatible
there isn't anything special you need cause it is amd cpu vice intel
if you find out what kind of scsi card the other boxen has, and it is supported (again, check the HCL), then it would work just fine also
i personally like scsi stuff, but for what you are talking aboot , i don't see what diff it would make
good luck! and have fun! :)

Thanks,
I said that I'm stuck with Redhat because the class is using Redhat.
I attempted to install Redhat 6.1 on my AMD K6-2 500 and it failed because of the AMD chip. I had to settle and place it on my Intel PI 166. (This is the reason I'm inquiring about the Duron chip)
I checked out the link you gave me for the Redhat combatability list. For the processors they listed:
Alpha
Intel x86 based
Sparc
I did not see any AMD chipsets (unless Alpha and/or Sparc are AMD). I did check AMD's site to see if they call their Duron by a different name, but I was unable to.
I'm still helplessly lost....

then just put it onto the intel boxen, most scsi apapters are supported, you will know really quickly if it will work or not , as the installer won't get very far if it has no hd to install to
I'm using MANDRAKE 7.2(RED HAT CLONE)with a DURON 750 and didn't have any problems with it.

Your AMD is Intel x86 compatible. AMD is a cheaper/better clone of intel (i.e. runs the same way.) Of course they use different mobos and stuff, but they are, for the most part, the same thing. :)

Thank you very much guys.
As you can tell from my questions, I'm not exactly the quickest cookie on the block.
I never meant to put down Redhat. I just wanted to emphasis that I didn't have a choice incase someone were to suggest a different linux 'flavor' to work around a problem I had.
I hope that after my Linux classes I will be able to help people on here like I have been helped.
Thanks Again.

i know, i use different distros all the time
i guess i was just trying to see if somebody had "turned you off" to redhat for some reason, or maybe i was just being nosey, whatever
no hard feelings?
Welcome to LNO! have fun, be safe, use linux! ;)
if you ever want some other distros to try out, just email me or post, i will send you a variety pack :)

I say the install didn't fail because of the AMD K6-2 500. Most likely, you had your memory setup wrong, the wrong type of memory, mixing diferent types of memory, or maybe you were overclocking the CPU(I've had problems O/Cing the K6-2 500). I don't mean to sound like a dick-head(sorry all), but I've personally had RH6.0 through 7.0 installed on a box with a K6-2 500 CPU.

This is from another post here recently. Don't know if it's the reason for your RH install problem though.
At boot, it's trying to disable the cruddy P3 CPUID by default (DAMN Intel!), and since my Thunderbird processor doesn't have one, it's crashing. When I installed Redhat, where it asks for extra parameters to pass to the kernel, I just had to add x86_serial_nr=1 and it worked like a charm. If it's already installed, i would have typed linux x86_serial_nr=1 at the boot prompt to fix it.
