I am tired of my Radeon 9700 Pro not working properly in Suse....with Christmas coming up, it's a perfect time to upgrade to a good quality Linux compatible card.

What is the latest and greatest NVIDIA card out these days? Don't all of those work perfectly with Linux drivers? I have crashed my system a couple of times trying to get 3d acceleration working with that $%#@ Radeon.

Thanks
Charles

Take a look at the minumum required for Doom3, and get whatever you can afford above that.

Its not top of the range, but my FX5900XT hasn't cause me any problems, with drivers or playing Doom 3 / Neverwinter on Linux. It plays Half-Life 2 very nicely too. Pitty its only in Windows at the moment :(

It's mostly the same card as the one you linked to, except it's on steroids (it has the full 16 shader pipelines, where the 6800 OC only has 12, plus its clocks are all a lot faster).

Of course, it's also double the price... ;)

As for me, I have a 6800 GT (right in between these two cards), and it seems to work fine. The only issue is that it's a power HOG -- I had to upgrade from my old 350W power supply to a 500W one just to get it to boot up properly.

YIKES! I was thinking something more in the ~$200 or so range. You guys have the big guns out. =)

Of course, I did pay $300 for my Radeon 9700 Pro...way back when.

So the 6600Gt/6800Gt is in the middle range these days? or is that the higher end of the range?

Thanks for your suggestions.

whatever you do, dont get the nvidia fx5200. just got one yesterday. yes, setup was a snap (compared to my old radeon 7500), but it seems to perform way worse than my 7500. image was actualy really clear with my radeon using the open source drivers. i might actually take it back and keep my radeon a little longer. makes my monitor flicker a bit when booting (grub) and the asus splash.

The FX 5200 Ultra is fine, however. Just wanted to clarify. They are actually fairly different cards. I have owned both.

But once you include the 6600s, I think it gets a little closer to the top end, and I know it gets a lot closer to the top end once you include NV3x chipsets (FX level cards).

In other words, I think the 6600 series cards are slower than the 6800 series, and I know the FX cards are slower. The 6800 series itself has 3 members -- the 6800, the 6800GT, and the 6800 Ultra.

For about $200... hmm. The 6600 GT might work, although the vast majority of them seem to be PCI-Express (instead of AGP). If you don't have a PCI-Express motherboard, you won't be able to use them.

the 6600GT has a AGP 8x version, though in the beginning it was only PCI express

How bout the Geforce fx 5700 ultra? It costs less than $200, but it can run doom3 at 50 FPS. :D

I was thinking of something like this, too. I've got an FX5700 LE, which is pretty nice, IMHO. I'm not too picky on games, so long as I can get decent playability at 1024x768, I'm happy, and my FX5700 LE fits this bill well enough for me.

There were no AGP 6600's at Newegg at all.

(And yeah, I know, this doesn't mean they don't exist.)

Thanks guys for all your suggestions, I'm not sure what I'm going to right now. I'd kind of like for it to have a tvtuner on it too. So I can record tv shows.

Thanks

I've got me one of these, never run Doom 3 on it.

It's a great card, however I'd go with a 5900XT, they both are within the same price range, and the 5900XT is ALOT more powerful!

though the 6600GT is abot twice as fast as a 5900XT, if you are not into gaming, then it wouldnt matter.
i heard of the nvidia 5700 personal cinema, but i dont know much about it.

Guys,

Any idea which is better? The 6600 GT or the 6800 LE ??

They are both about the same price @ Newegg.com.

Any certain brand with the Nvidia chipset I should lean towards? for the best support in Suse?

Any of you guys using a video capture card? What kind? Does it work well with Linux?

I have been using this one for long time now (the older version of) LEADTEK WINFAST TV2000 XP EXPERT EDITION STEREO TV CAPTURE CARD PCI W/ REMOTE Now $77. canadian (around $60. U.S.) Worked nice for me except no remote control in Mandrake. i converted some vhs tape into mpeg with it and watch a lot of tv. Requires a minimum of configuration and no configuration at all since i installed MDK 10.1
