I'm looking for a decent, free web host. Just somewhere to put a little text content. I wouldn't mind Google-type ads at all, but I'd like to avoid bigger, more obtrusive types of ads. No PHP or MySQL support needed. Really, 1-2 MB of space would do fine. Any advice?

Oh, and FTP access is a must! Or SSH, SCP, etc. As long as there's a non-web-interface way to upload content.

mybesthost.com redirects to 100hosting.com, and requires an address. Clean looking first page, though.

Your ISP should offer a small amount of space. Or if you have broadband access, setup your own web server and use a dns service fo rhte domain name.

I lately searched for stuff like this, and the amount that google returns is enormous! www.frandt.com seems to be very good (with PHP support) but sends a mail only in 3 to 10 days if you don't pay $1.00. www.atspace.com didn't allow me to upload big files, don't recommend that one. www.100webspace.com was bounced by my e-mail server, so I haven't set that one up yet.
Anyway, google for it - you'll find a lot with more than you want and no ads.

I most certainly googled around, but the problem was that there was a huge amount of stuff to sift through. I'd also like to avoid hosts that boast great service who soon take my site down without giving a reason (not that my content is going to be controversial in the slightest, I just don't want flaky service).

Then purchase a low-cost hosting plan man... If you are gonna demand so much, and ask for it for nothing, hmmm...sounds like "Free as in beer;" someone's gotta pay for it somewhere, no?

1 MB storage space, piddle for bandwidth, no databases or SSI, no e-mail, no shell account, FTP access, no ridiculously obtrusive ads (Google style or Geocities style are excellent) and not a sleezy or faltering host? That's asking a lot? That's all I'm really looking for, here. I think that sounds like a great deal for *them*. I might cost them as much as 3 cents for electricity, but I might generate 15 cents by letting people see the ads. That's a net gain of 12 cents. Really, am I asking a lot?

Also, for the record, I have no Internet service. I can access the 'net from work, so I'll be working on the site at home, then coming to work to upload it (my boss / network admin are cool about it as long as it doesn't become a problem).

I just setup an acount at 100webspace.com (same as hollosite.com) - and I absolutely love it! The control panel is very good, you get support for PHP (and I think CGI, not sure), you get 1 5M MySQL database, you can get 5 subdomains, 1G transfer limit, you can use an existing domain... Just have a look at the all screenshots part of my site for a clue on how fast it loads - Very Good.
I _really_ recommend this one

I'd go for them if it wasn't for the requirement to give them an address.

Giving an address is a problem? With everything your saying, it sounds like your trying to setup a redirect site or one with grey area content. If they need an address, give them one. If your going to pay for hte hosting, they will need a billing address anyway. If ads are not an issue, then setup with geocities and be done with it. Besides, hostign sites is more then just the cost of electricity. Bandwidth comes to the top of the list.

Didn't understand that was all you were asking for...sorry buddy...but it sounded like you wanted more than you obviously did... Umm, might want to try out tripod.com, they used to be purty good...

I have no problem giving my address for billing purposes. Maybe it's just a placebo effect, but I feel safer if they're being paid for something, like maybe there's a little more liability there. If they just ask me for my address with no guarantee that they'll actually provide a service, that's a little fishy. If push comes to shove, I'll take off the tin foil hat.

My content isn't grey. I want to post little niche-audience python tutorials, and maybe a couple scripts.

I remember tripod having some banner ads / popups. Not really optimal, but I'll look in to them. Thanks for the tip!

I submitted a request for Portland, but they haven't mailed me back. Don't know if they will or if it just takes a couple days.
