Is this a new custom kernel, or a Redhat provided one?

Yes..

it was provided by RH itself.... Wat may be the prob? Is there any way to recover it withot re-installing?

You could drop into rescue mode (ie: boot from RH9 CD-1 and enter "linux rescue"). See if you can mount your root filesystems. If yes, you may be able to salvage your data by offloading it to another partition. If not, you have probably lost the filesystem along with the data it contained.

Just got this same message an hour ago when I booted up. What causes this/how can I stop it???

Sayantan, it seems like you are using a dual(or multi) boot system. So what does "bootloader" refer to? Lilo, GRUB or NTLDR?

Do what palinux says to recover your data. The linux rescue works even for the worst kind of kernel panics.

What partitions do you have on the disk? (use fdisk in linux to check) What operating systems are you using? Where is the bootloader installed? MBR or your /boot partition?

And what is the .conf file for your bootloader? Are you sure that you have that right? Could you show us that?

eskiled, kernel panic can happen due to many reasons. What is the exact error message you get on the last line? The text just before often provides pointers to what has happened...
