is there any way to make my slave-hd be seen as disk 0 without changing jumpers and cables?

Not that I know of. You could try to fool the system into thinking that they're switched by doing the following:

1) Rename the device files (/dev/hd0 ?...hopefully you know what they are cause I don't) to something else that's not taken.

2) Create a symlink to the new file, making sure it has the name of the old file. I believe the syntax is "ln -s <file to link to> <new file name>". The file to link to and new file name may be the other way around, but if they are it will give you an error msg and if I'm right it won't.
The only problem I can think of with this is that I'm not 100% sure that changing the name of a device is legal, or if this will work. It should. Give it a shot.

I haven't even been able to install linux yet. Here is what I'm trying to do with what I have.
1. Install win98se on second hd.
2. Install System Commander 2000 on second hd.
3. Install RH6.0 on primary drive.
I need the MBR to be on the second hd so that I can use SC2000 to install RH6.0.
The reason I'm trying to do this is because my second hd is a 7400rpm drive and my system wont recognize it as master. I tried installing as master but the system doesn't recongnize it.
Also, when I tried to install RH6.0 on the slave with SC2000, it overwrote win98 on the master. Go figure?
??does this make sense to anyone out there??

-thanks for your help

Hrmmm...this is one of those no-zones for me where I'm more likely to blunder around like an idiot. All I can say is to poke around in the BIOS, cause that's probably your best chance of finding something like this. good luck!

You may find documents on the web on installing Windows on a second drive and Linux on the first. It is doable.

I know Caldera has a knowledgebase article on the subject, but it uses the Grub bootloader for this instead of lilo (RH6). You can find the document by searching for 'second' here (http://support.calderasystems.com/caldera).

Noticed your from Huntington Beach. Was in California a year ago on a 8 day business trip and visited your area. Remember the brick wall with the sign 'Pier Plaza, Huntington Beach. Stayed at Santa Mesa (I think it was).
