Hi,

I have a dell inspiron 2500 /w RH72. It works great except when the nic isnt plugged in it slows down considerably. things just load very slowly, but once they are started they work normally.

At load up it tries to initialies eth0 but takes about 1.5 minutes then fails. then when Gnome starts up it complains that it cant verify the connection.

Is this a problem w/ linux or my notebook?
Is there anyway to make it quickly check the connection?

thanx.

This could be because you have removed the NIC physically but you still have stuff in startup/configuration files. RH tries to find your NIC, this could take some time. I'm not quite sure about which files you should edit, just check your startup files or check the manual. You could try running netcfg, but I don't know if it removes a card logically.

No he is saying when not plugged in...he is using a notebook.
I'm guessing your system would like to have it's dns servers back...once it finishes loading, it should not be slow unless you are using a network app. Is your IP static?

Yes my ip is static for home. At work I just use DHCP to make things easier.

Ok, if it is the DNS then if suppose I list one of each (work & home) dns servers this may help. will it go down the list till it finds a response. but my ip will be totally wrong anyway so it cant find a DNS server.

hmm, let me experiment.

thanx
