 This sounds quite serious. My computer has Slackware 8.0 and I was planning on checking out AbiWord, but now maybe I'll hold off. Sorry I can't be of any help.
it can not be serous, i bet it is something like a script or something that was incorrectly written with the wrong direction or not pointing to where the fonts are...
the program launches niecly, and it has a good GUI...
all my other text editing software works like Gedit, Gnotepad+, emacs Gnumeric spreadsheet, so it cant be too serous...
Bump:
anybody got an idea, what this could be???

Have you tried reinstalling? Try building it from source if you used a package manager.
even the version of AbiWord that was included with Slackware8 was broken, i got that latest .tgz from Linuxpackages.net and installing it still did not fix it...
if i dont get it fixed soon i guess i will have to be satisfied with gedit (lol)...

Anything at the AbiWord support site on this or something in the included documentation that may indicate what needs to be done to fix the problem?
How about the preferences/settings for such things as fonts or fontpaths?
Does AbiWord have it's own font package that needs to be installed?

Does AbiWord have a mailing list? You should send something to them.
what would i send them???
a bug report???
offically AbiWord is still a 0.9 beta app so i doubt i would get a reply, but sending them something can not hurt...
ok, off to write a bug report...
