Dear Moderator & enthusiasts-
When I tried to install k3b I got the following error:
Failed dependencies:
libFLAC++.so.2 is needed by k3b0.11.17-1.xcyb.rh9.
libFLAC++.so.4 is needed by k3b0.11.17-1.xcyb.rh9.
libid 3.8.so.3 is needed by k3b0.11.17-1.xcyb.rh9.
libmad.so.0 is needed by k3b0.11.17-1.xcyb.rh9.
I am running RedHat 9, server installat ion, on a home-built
Athlon system. I want to back up files to DVD, and would be glad to use something else if it were easier to install and bring up the interface. I read an earlier post that mentioned that the necessary stuff was on my install disks, but there was no indication what package(s) to install.
Thanks in advance,
Marc

There are the fish, now for the fishing pole:

Read about using apt for the rpms.
Good luck.

Thanks, hard candy-
I decided to start with synaptic, haven't got the FLAC stuff but I'm working on it. If you read this and have time to reply, which rpm repositiories do I want to configure in synaptic?

I had errors too when trying to install from source, so I just used apt-get and it all went fine, you might wanna try that. But I am using Fedora Core 2 though.

I did get synaptic to update a lot of files, I still had to rpm -i the ones you provided the links to. I then tried to to install a couple of different k3b packages for RH9, and got about 8 pages of errors complaining about "not found" , "couldn't install" "no such file or directory " and the like. I think I will despair of installing it and instead try the command line appproach with the stuff that's supposed to be built in, growisofs, cd record, and whatever else k3b is a frontend for. Do you all know of a manual for doing this?

"man growisofs".
http://www.k3b.org/ also has some RH9 packages. Do you have KDE installed? K3b is made to run with KDE, you do not have to use KDE but it needs to be present for K3b to install/run optimally.

Yes, I did install KDE from the built-in RH Package Manager. I will look again and check to see what the Package Manager says about it. Is this business of installing normally tricky or have I just completely botched it? I really need to get better, so if there are some things I could try or look at to understand I would appreciate the suggestions.
Meanwhile, I need a way to back up several GB of files so that I can reinstall if that becomes necessary.
TIA,

Red Hat is notorious for for being very easy but very difficult at the same time. It has proprietary links and start up configurations which can prove hard to install non Redhat packages into. That said, if you really want a cd burner gui maybe try Arson ( http://arson.sourceforge.net/ ) and see how that installation goes. It is as easy as K3b to use. It may install a little easier as well.

Dear Moderator & friends-
I am pleased to report that after a few days of struggling to figure out how to install K3B with apt, I just gave up and tried it from the command line again, and it worked! I was unable to complete K3B setup, for some reason I can't access the buttons at the bottom of the dialog window
( they're under the panel). Anyway, when I started K3B, I got a dialog warning about" Unable to find growisofs executable" and "Unable to find dvd +rw executable" so I need to do some more installing before I burn any DVD's, I guess, but it's looking much more promising. Thanks for the help and support. If this thread will be open I will report on my progress.

Dear Moderator & fellow enthusiasts-
I have successfully installed K3B, but now I need an rpm for Red Hat 9,( dvd+rw-tools5.x.x.x.rpm) or a way to get an apt package ( dvd+rw-tools5.x.x.x.??)that works with apt-get or synaptic. I am, to say the least, painfully unfamiliar at this point with anything other that rpm -i at the command line ( or perhaps running a ./ executable from the command line). I have got the dvd+rw-tools 5.x.x.x tar.gz file expanded to my /home directory but have no idea what the next step is to installing it on my system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
