i was wondering if there was a truly moble distro that anyone knew of... something like morphix, but with the ability to save user data to an external hdd or usb drive... any ideas?

Knoppix does.
I have a USB memory stick that it uses for my home directory.
Store files, scripts, mp3's.
I have Firefox there also.

Damn Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org) lets you even save to a thumb drive. Puppy-Linux works really well off of a thumb drive.
