I've just bought/built a new box

Athlon-xp 2400
Abit NF7-S2G Motherboard
GeforceFX 5700 Ultra
512 Ram
other odds and ends....

and anyway, after I got it all put together I installed slackware on it. But when the install was finished and I had booted up, I found that I had no networking. So I assumed that it was just a kernel issue. But part of my problem is that I have no clue what the actual LAN device is, and I've found no way of specifying its exact identity.
So I my main question is, is this gigabit net device supported in the latest kernels? Or the 2.4 kernels for that matter.

I had a broadcom one once, try

lspci|grep Ethernet

See if you can find that device in the kernel section for 1000Mbit ethernet cards.

All I get is 01:0b.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technology, Inc.: Unknown device 3119 (rev 11) Which I'm assuming just means that it can only see that there is a device there, but doesn't recognize it, correct?

you need the drivers for the VIA Gigabit Ethernet stuff.

not sure what its called, but look in your kernel config under "Device Driver -> Networking -> 1000 MBit"

and it should be in there.

and thats on a current 2.6 kernel.

I would select all the 1000GB as modules until you find out which one it does use then only select that in the kernel config.

there are really not many and the details on the board specs are listed so the scatter gun troubleshooting might be the best way to go

Ok, well, hmm, this is odd. When I recompile the kernel, copy bzImage, edit lilo, etc, then reboot into the new kernel, it doens't work, all it does is the screen goes black after it says "loading bzImage whatever"
The only thing I've been able to think of is that maybe as I have a very new bios (or I believe so) that the bzImage is not compatible with my bios. I know that is true for the gentoo boot disks and their boot images.
Is this pretty closs to being the cause?

I had hell getting my nforce board working well.
Look at my site for some .configs and such. I have an Abit NF7-S, and my ethernet is the forcedeth in 2.6.

As for the black screen on booting a recompiled 2.6 kernel, that's a very well known gotcha...google around. You have to enable the vc sometimes.

Ok I'll take a llok at your .configs.
Oh, and it was a 2.4 kernel, not 2.6
