do you have to use deb files for this distro or can tar files and rpms work as well?

Yes, of course you can compile stuff. As for rpms.. I don't know.

you can compile things.

packages from debian.org may or may not work. I'd recommend against using them.

Packages from ubuntu should always work.

yeah, compiling from source is hard at first, but once you learn to understand the error messages and are able to solve the dependency problems it's not so bad. On top of that, you get cutting edge software that may run faster on your computer.

Yeah, that's true typically software that you compile on your computer will only run 5% faster. This is not very signifigant. Some software (such as the X-windows sytem) , however, will run 20% faster if you compile it on your computer.

See most precompiled binaries are compiled for the i386 architecture, for compatibility. Nowadays, however, everyone runs i586 or 686 computers, so the binaries will be slow.

That's why some people like to run source based distros :)

Holy crap! are you an admin here? You seem to have a chip on your shoulder so I assumed you were just another poster.

Sorry for making fun of your name. Also, I see the graphic in your post. Are you threatening to set me on fire? If so, I think it's illegal to threaten to kill someone over the internet, so you might want to change that before the FBI finds out about it.

Gehidore has helped many people here. This forum is pretty much strictly linux and we get off-track quite a bit, but we all show each other respect. You might be kidding but gehidore has showed that he does not like what your doing. Now I would suggest to take a rebuke with grace, and just show a little more respect to that one member / admin, whichever he may be. If I was him I would have been "Uhh banniated". I don't like all the rules here but I try to abide by them, one of them being the rule of respect. You have been warned I suggest that you take the wisest course of action.

All apololgies.

I see now that I have become a hinderance to the community, and struck a nerve with many ppl.

I will try to remain more on topic, and not create flame wars.

However, Can't we have fun, and discuss linux topics at the same time? I mean, I don't think I've created flame wars or hijacked threads that were of critical importance. Most of the threads I've responded to were "What distro is the best" or "Age/sex/location" type threads.

My humor was off-color and stupid. My bad.

I had honestly hoped the thread would have died on its own. But it didn't so its dead now.

Fill, try not to troll.

mmills, i assume your question was answered from the title, but if it wasn't feel free to repost and i'm sorry your original thread died.
