Try:
modprobe bcm5700 and see what errors come up.
or insmod bcm5700

I have a couple of these new Dell systems with the broadcom NIC and have not yet found a way to make the drivers in Linux work with it. The tg3 driver is the driver that is supposed to work with this NIC on systems running a 2.6.x kernel but I've seen many postings of people besides myself not being able to get it working. The bcm5700 driver was the one to use in the 2.4.x kernels but if you're running a current version of just about any Linux distribution it will be running a 2.6.x kernel and will likely not even include the bcm5700 driver. I've seen some posts where people have compiled their own kernel for their system and got the bcm5700 driver at least partially working but my recommendation to reduce hassle is to install a cheap RealTek 8139 based NIC and disable the onboard Broadcom NIC.

thanks guys I will look around and see if anyone has a solution if not I will try disabling the onboard and installing a 3comm or other type.
there is also that project for the Linux Wrapper module to make windows nic drivers run under Linux.
NOT a free project tho.
