So. I'm thinking of updating my Mandrake 8.0 to KDE 2.2.2. I've found the rpms and I've got two options to install it. Either the cli with rpm or through the package manager in IceWM. Anyone using 8.0 using KDE 2.2.2 yet? How does it perform. Is load time really faster? That's my main reason for trying. Also will an update destroy my customized menus. Will I have to redo them after or will they remain? Same general question for Xfree 4.2. Anyone update to it in 8.0? Any pitfalls to look out for?

I'm using Mandrake 8.1, which comes with KDE 2.2.1
I upgraded to 2.2.2 (lol, too many 2s!) by dropping everything in a directory I handily created for such a task.. then once I had everything I did:
$ rpm -ivh --force *.rpm
in a console. That way it doesn't complain about another part of the kde package that isn't installed yet.. and it all just slaps it on regardless.
I log out, restart X just to be safe and log back in.. check my Control Panel and it now says I'm running 2.2.2.
It won't lose any of your settings, as all of your settings are stored in the hidden directory ".kde/" in your home directory. As long as you don't touch ".kde/" you should be fine.
As for speed improvements I really didn't notice any. There are, of course, bugfixes and such. You can probably hunt down the changelog over at kde.org (http://www.kde.org) if you were really *****ious.
Hope this helps.

Make sure you use the Mandrake 8.0 RPMs! - otherwise your config might get seriously screwed by conflicts etc.
Why not just use MandrakeUpdate?

I know, I've started downloading the rpms. What I wanna do is download the whole pile, burn them to the cd and then the ones I want and save the rest if I wanna do another machine later. But I'd like to just update my present KDE without dumping it outright. Is there anywhere that shows an install order of what files need to be installed first (like the qt libs then the kdebase and so on) I use a minimalist KDE and just wanna update the parts I use. I don't use office or a lot of the eye candy, just choice apps.
