I just installed Mandrake 8.0, and during install selected the ACCELLERATED version of XFree86 (4.0.3). Now, when I try to change resolutions, X restarts!! This also happens when a game tries to change the desktop size.

I went into the mandrake control center and selected the NON-ACCELLERATED version of XF, and whaddya know but it worked! I can change resolution when I choose the non-accellerated version.

Obviously my problem lies somewhere with the accellerated X. Does anyone have any help for me? I'd like to try to narrow down the posibilities. Right now I have no idea what do to.......except go back to mandrake 7.2 (NOOOOOOO).

Is there ANYONE else using a voodoo 3 in Mandrake 8.0? If so, is anyone else having this problem I'm having? Also, I had no problem with accellerated X in mandrake 7.2. This is something totally new to 8.

Anyone know who I can ask for a solution to this? Where can I submit a bug report on this?

Have you tried mandrake's website? It may be a problem with 4.0.3 or something specific with MDK 8.

If it helps any, I don't have a problem with ATI video cards in MDK 8.

Okay.. So I figured out what module is causing the crash.. the DRI module. If I comment it out in the XF86config-4 file, switching resolutions works.

I went to the DRI homepage and found NOTHING addressing my problem. What now?

I have the exact same problem that you have; I am searching for a solution to. I've looked on Mandrake's website, but no luck. It sucks!! I want to play quake really bad, but it dies immediately. Have you tried the Mesa gears demo? I have and it works for me. I get 70 fps running that. If that works, what could it be that's causing the problem? Come on guys! We need some help here.

Two possible answers, they both involve upgrade.

Upgrade to cvs dri
or
Upgrade to kernel 2.4.4

There are a lot of reasons to upgrade to the kernel, so that might be the easiest one to try first.

I already figured you knew it was with dri, but like RH, mandrake has a custom kernel, so who knows if it is thier kernel, how they compiled it, or how they compiled the X.

Prometheux, the mesa gears demo works. Actually, hardware accelleration works perfectly, in case you didn't notice. The problem occurs when you or a program tries to switch resolution.

If you want to play quake badly enough, go into the mandrake control center and change your resolution to 640x480. Then, when you start quake, the resolution will already be set and it won't die.

I still haven't found an (easy) solution to this. Goddamn, upgrading to mandrake 8 was the worst thing I ever did.. What a BUGGY distro!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may want to look into recompiling the kernel to include AGP device drivers for 3-Dfx..

I certainaly hear a 50/50 story on Mandrake 0 - has anyone obtained a boxed pack yet - I don't think so,,,,,

When you install Mandrake 8.0 it has an option for accelleration under 3.3.6. This might work fine for you, the last benchmarks I saw had 3dfx hardware running faster under 3.3.6 then under 4.x anyways. Mandrake 8.0 installed fine for me although I'm using a different 3d card.
