Sorry this isn't directly linked to Linux, though I do run Linux (Gentoo) on the computer in question. I hope that qualifies this post!

The interesting problem with the combination above is that it doesn't boot. It does power up, but nothing does anything while the monitor simply stays blank. However, when I put in my Duron 1800, it comes back to life!

I have tested the Athlon chip in another motherboard which runs at a lower FSB speed and it works fine there. I haven't tested the chip at its full FSB rate (400MHz (dual 200MHz)). The motherboard is designed to run the Athlon 3200...

I have read (from Google searches) about people having similar problems but none quite like this. They can all at least get into the BIOS to change the CPU settings.

Any ideas?!

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried pulling the plud and resetting the bios with the jumper? Then power up to see if it worked.

First, I would look through the manual and see if there is possibly a jumper change that needs to be made to handle the voltage for this CPU. The fact that a Duron is able to boot leads me to think the voltage regualtion is involved when you install the higher voltage CPU.

Yes, several times. Sorry, I should have said that in the top post!

I also installed the latest version of the BIOS (though the 3200 has been supported since the original version of the BIOS).

First, I would look through the manual and see if there is possible a jumper change that needs to be made to handle the voltage for this CPU.

The only jumper on the board relating to the CPU is a higher voltage. The jumper is set "correctly" and the variations in voltage are set in the BIOS. However, I can't alter the voltage to the Athlon voltage while the Duron is in the slot, as it seems to change the available options on a per-processor basis.

I shall check the finer details of the voltage settings...

Thanks both for your replies!

The other thing I see repeatedly is bios corruption. The solution is to reflash but if the floppy is not working how would you do that?

Well, I am 95% sure that it is the motherboard at fault. I shall take my CPU in to work tomorrow and play with that in one of my servers there.

When I updated my BIOS, I had to borrow a floppy out of one of my Sun boxes... I have been running without a floppy for quite some time now!

When will BIOSes be able to download updates from the web?! :D :D

Well, my ABit will update floppy-less, but only under Windows:mad:
