Hello,

I'm running MandrakeLinux 9.0 under KDE. I've downloaded the Intel 537EP driver and am attempting to install it...

In the instructions it says I need the Kernel source headers for the kernel I am running.

I get as far as "make 537" and this is what I get:

Module precompile check
current running kernel is: 2.4.19-16mdk
/lib/modules... autoconf .h does not exist
Please install kernel source
Make: *** [check] Error 1

When I goto install packages, I'm not sure what I should be installing

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Modem use is a priority on this box and since there are drivers for this winmodem.. I'd like to get it running... even if it means I'll lack hair and the end of the process. hehehe

Thanks,

Dan

There should be a package on one of your Drake discs that is called Kernel-headers.rpm or something similar.

I have always used RPMDrake (is that what it is called  I can't remeber!!):o

I then search the CD from within RPMDrake for any package on the CD containing "kernel". From memory, it is on CD2

It should come up with kernel-headers.

I hope this helps and doesn't furterh confuse or compound the issue!:)

thanks for the info.. I found the kernel header and kernel source packages and installed them...

installing the modem driver went further this time but it still didn't work so I downloaded another driver... that one went a bit further once again.. but still no go...

It was much easier with the other winmodem I had... and I decided to give up on this one ... Linux.. you win.. I'm just going to get a serial modem.

And to my surprise... a friend had a USR sportster 56K x2 on the shelf and gave it to me... however.. I can't go a day without getting into trouble :D

I did get the sportster to work.. only connected at 28.8 so I flipped a dip switch to see if that would help... wouldn't connect at all.. so I switched it back... now it connects but doesn't go anywhere... not sending data out.

Is there anything I should check? I'm running Mandrake 9.0 under KDE

Thanks...

Dan

(edit) Ok, I did some poking around in the forum and found the info
on the /etc/resolv.conf file and did some editing to add my ISPs
DNS and all works well now!

Hi Dan

Can I just go back to your winmodem for a moment. Is it based on a Conexant chipset?

If so, there are drivers available to get this type of modem working with no problems (at least for me on my laptop!)

Here is the link (http://www.int21.de/conexant/)

As far as your serial modem goes, it coudl be the serial port, maybe try the other serial port on you PC (if you have one!)

I hope this helps!:)
