Slackware 8.0 is solid. I've only found one strange thing---if you use kernel 2.4.5 and try to recompile it using the bare.i kernel settings, there's a strange error when you get to the make modules_install stage. I think there's something wrong with the code for one of the modules. Something like pcmcia and comdec.o? I can't really remember. Search the LNO BBS General Linux Questions for "Slackware kernel compile problems." I posted the problem in more detail a couple of weeks ago.

I've recently done this. Now running 2.4.17 and it's really quick...

A bit wuicker than Debian was, just harder to install packages that aren't included on the cd's...

It's not a "where," but a philosophical construct - sex is the opposite of windows, and slackware is still more opposite. You have to think logically about these things.

If you don't mind *unstable* in the sense of debian packages...try out the slackware-current/ tree on slackware.com's ftp or any mirror (that mirrors -current)

Linuxmafia.org has moved to:
Linuxpackages.net

I don't see slackware being any more difficult than another distribution, it all comes together after a while anyways.

 Slackware

It's so solid, I can take the distro cd, stomp on it, run it over with my car, and still install from the CD! :D

I actually successfully transferred all of my system over to my new machine using only cp -av. Never got that to work with RedHat...

That IS one rock solid distro. I couldn't do that with mine. ;)

Now I understand why so many rave about Slack.

After using mandrake for a month I changed to slackware. If only I would have started with it. slackware is stable, fast and simple and easy to use.

oh yea it's solid alright. i switched from drake 7.2 to slack 8 about a month ago. the only configuration issue that i haven't been able to resolve is to be to run startx as a normal user. it won't allow me. anyone know how to set the right permission to let me do this? thx

Make sure you run xf86config as root first if you haven't already.

i already have X configured and running. i can run startx as root without a problem. the only way for a normal user to get into X is if gdm or kdm is running. what i wanna do is allow a normal user to run startx.

Slack is amazing... I LOVE IT!

Everything makes sense... and no stupid obscure GUI configuration tools that mess everything up.
All the config files are commented so that you can load one up in an editor having had NO idea what it was, and successfully edit it about 5 minutes later.

As for the X problem... that's weird. Because after i installed Slack for the first time, i did *no* configuration and typed startx as my first command... it just worked straight away.
Maybe you did something wrong in the install process?

Then just create a ~/.xinitrc file with exec blackbox or exec gnome-session etc in it.

i have slack installed and Im trying to get my NIC cards working right now (see tech forum for my post) i dont know any tech differences between other distros, but i know that Slack just feels right. I've tried redhat and mandy and i think they both felt wrong to me. They're too glamour and glitz, too flashy. Slack is only 1 ISO also and the install is way better than the others.

slack is the best distro of all i have tried (mandrake, redhat, debian, caldera)
with blackbox, its amazingly fast - 3-4 seconds after i type startx im in my gui
its solid, never crashes and is pretty easy to install - slackware.com has some good info and this board has answered any questions i have had. :cool:slackware

make sure you do the menu based install.....that way, it dosnt take too long and you get to choose the packages.

anyone know when the next stable version will be released?
