Exactly what the title says. I want to install WineX, but it costs money, and I cant find a price anywhere on the site, so they're hiding something from me. Or I can download the source code and complie it for free.
Who has tried this? What are the benefits/disadvantages of doing the free option. Does it always work? What issues are there?
I suck at compiling... something always goes wrong. I'm the boss... need the info! :D

See, the problem with that, is that you have to download it using CVS - no nice tarballs available, which is me snookered, because I only download large (5+ meg) files in work.

I might be mistaken but...

You are :)
WineX is to Wine what DirectX is to Windows, whilst XWine, as far as I can tell, is a launcher - you select various options, which it then passes to wine when it runs the Windows executable that you choose...

I was able to get the CVS download the other nite in less than a hour on my sub-28.8 modem.
Compiled no problems, after reading the README and doing ./tools/wineinstall
Haven't actually tried using it yet though.

to get the prepackaged version of winex, you need to be a subscriber, which costs 5$/month.
I think there's some extra stuff in the pre-packaged version anyway.
There's also some place on the net to get prepackaged rpms and tars of the CVS source, i forget the url though... search google for it

The latest prepackaged version is supposed to have support for handling certain copy protected CDs (like diablo 2). This is not available in the source since apparently they had to license the copy protection stuff from somebody else.
