Sometimes you need to close the Gnome Control Center before the themes show up. On some occasions they've not shown up until I logged out and back in.

It could be the way it was packaged, sometimes they compress it in an odd way, and there's an extra folder in the way, so the theme selector ignores that theme. You can try comparing that theme to another (make sure it's the same kind like both GTK or both Metacity, etc.) and see if they have the same structure.

I use Mandrake 10 as well, some themes, it seems, simpley won't work, either because of a missing theme "engine"(you can look on art.gnome.org for engines, there's only a few) or because they're made for a later version of GTK/Metacity/Whatever. We're kinda stuck with Gnome 2.4 until Mandrake 10.1, it shouldn't be to long though, community is already out.

Have you tried selecting 'Custom Theme' and then 'Theme Details' this is the only way I've been able to get the theme's I've downloaded and installed working.

hi!

yep i can do that, but the themes available are only the standard ones. i dont see anything coming from the 10 or so themes i downloaded, and "installed".

hmm...
