Hi,
I had a network browser icon on my desktop ( SUSE 9.1) and after re-installing the OS, the icon disappeared. What do I need to install to get it back ?

If it was a icon to a samba share, make sure that samba is installed. Then either using Yast or the command line mount the share, you should then either just get the icon on your desktop or you will need to recreate it to point to the mount point.
A bit more info would be helpful, what was the icon actually pointing to?

Thank you very much .
The Icon was pointing to other nodes ( WIN XP ) on my LAN. When I clicked on the Icon, it would show me the other XP computers.

In that case you will need to install samba and configure it, after that's done you should be able to see the other computers in your lan. Samba should be on your SuSE install cd's if you want the most up2date verson head over to www.samba.org and download it. After its installed you should be able to use a network configure tool in Yast or hand edit the config file.
If you have any problems have a search on the forum's, samba's site or www.google.com/linux If you can't find the answer post!

Hi,
I installed SAMBA client and SAMBA server but I still don't see the ICON on my desktop. The two processes smdb and nmbd are running. From the linux suse , I can ping the win XP machines in my network and vice versa. They are all configured in the same WORKGROUP. Any idea about what I'm missing ?

If the icon pointed to a shared drive you will need to remount it, and then create a icon for it on your desktop. I'm sure Yast has a GUI tool for mounting network shares, you can do it from the command line but I can't remember the command, I believe its:
mount -t smbfs //server/share -username -password
But I'm not sure :)

Try opening a new Konqueror window and typing 'service:/' in the address bar (minus the single quotes). If that works you could just create your own link on the desktop. If that doesn't work try checking to see if you have the kdebase3-samba package installed.

Hi,
it seems the problem was with the user acct. I wa logging all the time with the user which I created at SUSE installation. All I did was to cretae a new user and the Network Browisng Icon was back. However, when I try to browse the network, it says no workgroup available, but from the PC'S with WIN XP, in nework neighbourhood , I can see my SUSE machine.
