 I dual boot RH 6.2 with windows 98 SE right? And the screen flickers just barely enough to give me a seizure. So, hence I uninstall Linux in frustration due to the annoying resolution flicker and fall back into the lazy lap of Windoze's luxury- EASE OF USE (and no resolution flicker). Yet, I WANT TO LEARN LINUX!!! This cycle has been going on for 5 installs now. I read it has to do with the X configuration.

Anyways, the solution I've come up with is to read up on the O'Reilly books I bought impetuously on "Learning Linux","Learning Red Hat 6.2", "Linux in a Nutshell" and plug into this 'great, wonderful, terrific' Linux community I hear SOOOO much about but have no clue where to begin to begin. So here I am. Rock me like a hurricane (pun intended).

HOW do I use this community on mIRC and here efficiently and effectively get help and to help others????? And what's up with the "black belts" "grasshopper" and such? Should I just buy another Red Hat 7.1 distro?
Feel free to flame a newbie here as well as help me. rvp123@hotmail.com [LIST]

Forgive my half rant, half questionaire. What I am really looking for is how to learn Linux and plug into some support, as I can't quite do this alone without being involved in such an interesting community as this one. Thanks for your help in advance. I'll happily reply back on the posts to get more involved here. ;)

In order to set up X well (X can be a real *****), it's useful to know your monitor specs. You'll need to know its horizontal sync rate, and its vertical refresh rate at least. You'll also have to know what video card you run. Try going into a bash prompt and logging in as root. Type "XConfigurator" or if that doesn't work, "XF86Setup" or if that doesn't work, "xf86config". Those are the three I've heard of that will allow you to change your X settings without manually editing your XF86Config-4 file (quite possible, but never fun for a newbie). See if any of the aforementioned exist on your computer and work.

PS: This really is the ultimate in Linux Communitism (Communism? :p). IRC will get you a whole lot of sarcasm and 1337 script kiddies, but so long as you ask nicely and properly you'll always be taken seriously here.

Welcome to the community. I have just started unwrapping my linux. This forum along with the NHF have helped me through alot of problems. I have not the knowledge yet to answer the more complex questions but if you have something I know about I will try to respond. I don't even flame :)

Thanks you guys! :) Windows has me sooo lazy from its convenience that I needed a place to belong to get going on re-installing RH Linux and learning. And it looks like this is the best place to start. One last question. In your opinions, which is the best way to learn, to allow room for error? Buy another hard drive and use it for Linux or just dual boot Linux with Windoze 98SE? After your response I will close this topic and start planning my Linux education. Oy, I am going to hate working with X, as you mentioned Tyr-7BE. Rastar, any suggestions?

Well I started in Linux on Mandrake 7.2 and dual boot from windows. Since I could not get the Lilo to recognize the ME boot I had to reinstall ME (Oh boy) no not even fdisk /mbr would fix that problem. So there went all my work on Linux and oh dont forget all the stuff on windows. I then fished an old drive out of the closet and bought removeable racks. This worked except when I forgot to remove the Linux rack and put back in ME and the wife got mad. I have since bought an athalon 900 system for 289 with 128 megs of 133 ram and a video card. All in all it cost around 350 or so. Well now that you know the history. My recommendation is to buy a new drive. You will save alot of grief and both will work so much faster without the dual boot setup.

As for the Junior Grasshopper, Grasshopper and Blackbelt stuff read the FAQ it is the one that says how do I become a grasshopper. Basically it is on the amounts of postings you have done 45 till grasshopper and blackbelt etc are more moderators and admin types.

Hope this helps
