My new computer has a winmodem, and I've installed Linux Mandrake 10.
Rather than fiddle around trying to make it into a Linmodem, I've decided to buy an external modem
but I need advice on which is suitable.

First I'll be using dial-up internet access as ADSL has not reached our area, though it should be here in a few months.
So I need an external modem that will suit dial-up, ADSL, and serve my new linux computer, and also my old
Windows 98 computer.

Will one modem fulfill all of these requirements? If so can you suggest a reliable model.

Ta!

Pretty much any external serial modem should work fine

I'm not sure if I'm reading you correctly but, a dial up modem will only do just that-- dial up!!!:D At least I haven't seen one that could do both (would be awsome). Fortunately, when DSL does comes to your area, they typically offer an ADSL modem rental. (which is a good idea cuz they replace it if it dies). So you could get by on the cheap for right now. Check ebay for a US Robotics courier v.everything. they can be had for dirt cheap, and they're rock solid!

Good Luck!!!

Get a cheap second hand external modem until ADSL has reach to your location. And get a adsl-router for easy installation after adsl comes...

All serial port externel modems supported by linux via serial port driver.

assign your serial port device as modem to ypur dial-up programs. (aka kppp)

/dev/ttyS0 ---> COM1
/dev/ttyS1 ---> COM2

Thank you for your replies.

From which, I understand that there is no external modem able to use both ADSL and dial-up internet connections. So I have to get a normal dial-up modem, and later an ADSL modem.

I'm in Asia and if I bought anything from ebay it would be half-inched in the post, so can you recommend a solid *new* modem that will serve my Linux and my Windows computers.

There's a lot to choose from, and many pitfalls, so I'd appreciate your advice.

A Netgear Dg834 will do it for you.
