Hi Gang,

For the first time in a couple of years, I actually have some time to again be involved with Linux studies. I've been off from work for the past month or so, due to illness. Anyway, in trying to install an older version of "AcceleratedX_5.03' (http://www.xi.com) I've completely rendered my Xfree libraries usesless. The Accelereated X 'Uninstall' feature is supposed to restore the original configuration, but it didn't work out that way.

Please understand that this is NOT an X configuration problem. My XF86Config-4 file is perfect. I keep getting the error "Attempting to connect to the X server. ." Even after a few minutes it still doesn't connect. I've just compiled a new kernel and compiled/ installed Asterisk . . I don't want to have to resort to reinstalling Mandrake 10. If I do have to reinstall, can I easily switch to the "optimized" kernel I've just compiled?

Thanx,

Hi Gang,

I've gotten back into X Windows; I restored a "stable" backup of my /etc directory. I would still like to know how to repair X, however. If I weren't one of those 'anal' types who treats his little home network like a corporate LAN, then I'd not be able to graphically manipulate my small Linux server anymore.

All 5 of our systems here at home have regular 'stable' backups to fall back on at a moment's notice. It saved my old, fat rump this time. If I didn't have a backup of my system config, I wouldn't have known how to repair my server's X Windows.

Any knowledgeable advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanx,

Sorry, but if restoring the /etc directory fixed the problem, it wasn't the libraries. Those are stored in /usr/X11R6/lib.

G' day mates. Yes, I agree, what I'd failed to type into my previous posting is that the entire /usr and /lib partitions were restored as well.
