I've posted here because the tech support forum is not working, hope thats ok.
Using mandrake 8.1, I have auto configured my modem.
Inserted my blueyonder username and password, left all settings the same, did not know my authenication type so I left it as PAP.
If I set it on dev/modem, modem is busy
com1 com2, does not respond
com3 com4 ,modem is busy
If I go to the control center, and try to re-configure my modem. I'm told "cannot configure winmodem.
Can you help?

I can help, but you won't be happy of what you'll hear. Probably your modem is a winmodem that means, it is made for MS windows. The bad news is you may have to buy a new modem. The good news is that if you buy a proper modem you'll be sure it doesn't absorbe your CPU time. Winmodem are crap in a way that need the processor to work.
BUT, there are SOME winmodems which work under linux. Check about yours here.
http://www.linmodems.org.
I too have Mandrake 8.1, the "automatic config" you mentioned is a normal procedure of Mandrake that would have been done even without a modem attached.
Hope I helped.

The sick part about this whole problem is that modem manufacturers/microshaft have convinced people that they don't need that $2 part on their modem...

Come on guys before ya call it a winmodem ask him :D
Whats the specs at?
If you don't know take the card out and write every number you see down. Do a search on google for every number string (use yor best judgement). Most searchs for any brand/model of modem will bring you to a linux page from what I have found.
