I just recieved a Compaq Armada 1700. It has 96MB ram, p2 at 233mhz, 24GB HD, 24x cdrom. The battery doesnt hold a charge very well so i need to find a place that will sell a replacement to me. I also need memory. What i would like to know is if this is a good laptop for linux. I would like to install Slackware 10 on here. I will be getting a better laptop at the end of the year in a Dell with a p3 at 600mhz. Thanks.

I have a Compaq Armada 1700. It does have a 1750 motherboard though. Good old Compaq support put in the wrong one while it was still in warranty. The main difference between the two is the video chipset.

I run Linux on it just fine. I haven't tried very hard to get the internal modem working. Other than that it works great.

I use a Xircom PCMCIA card for 10/100 ethernet. I have an Orinoco Gold PCMCIA wireless card that works great.

I currently run Libranet on it. I have run debian on it in the past.
Knoppix also works well.

Good Luck,

There are some details here (http://www-students.biola.edu/rozinant/index.php?body=misc/install.html) about the laptop, although for a Mepis install - it should be enough to get you going with Slack.

I also like Linux on Laptops (http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/compaq.html) when looking for specific problems

Well Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I tried Slack last night and everything was ok after i configured the monitor. I didnt try to config the sound though. The modem is what i really want to get working since i have dialup and no money right now to get a modem card. Also it only has a 4GB HD and its a 266mhz p2. I wish it had more memory but oh well. If any of you have info on how to get the Compaq 56VL Global Internal Modem to work on this thing for Slack, I would be most grateful. Thanks again.

Well I decided to install Slack on my old PC i have laying around. It doesnt have a modem either but I am getting one next week. I would like to know how to setup iptables for a dial-up connection? Whould I deny all incoming packets? Sorry I am use to Suse's Firewall setup and not setting up iptables manually. Thanks.

The ram in the armada 1700 is hidden away under the keyboard. to get to it, you must push the two buttons holding the keyboard down, one under the left alt key, and the other under the right ctrl key. It has 32 mb internal memory and one normal one that will either be empty or have one in it already. I think you can put an additional 256 mb into it. Check out this page http://wireball.com/cms/armada_1750_repair, it is for the armada 1700 and 1750
