According to SuSE's earning reports...the SuSE Linux distro was the most popular of commercial versions in the United States. According to the numbers...SuSE has 38% of Linux desktops which beats out Mandrake, Red Hat, Slackware and Correl.

The above is only based on sales and NOT downloads. Mandrake is the most popular for downloading.

SuSE 7.1 + KDE 2.1.1 is sitting on my laptop now, amidst a corporation that is migrating from Novell NDS to M$ ADS.

I still have to run Outlook in a VMware box though 'cos they use HP OpenMail email server, and HP omgui (the email client) is pig ugly with no address search :-(

But, hey!, it's progress. At least I like it enough to actually use it day to day at work. Since I'm an IT professional, Linux gives me literally hundreds of cool tools ... for free!

(example: NAI Sniffer for Windows is something like $1K per *node*, knsuffle, ethereal, etc, are FREE! Wahay! Absolutely superb for a small biz such as mine)

I still want something less clunky that StarOffice to interoperate with M$ file formats though. Kivio is already looking good as a Visio replacement, but what about all my current visio docs :-(

I also have a gripe with the browsers under Linux, it seems none of them yield same results, esp. when java rears its ugly head (such as for my on-line banking, again I have to do that thru VMware and IE5).

Anyways, more power to the penguin I say.

Wouldnt the fact that you HAVE TO BUY Suse is one of the reasons? :D

These stats were also taken near the release of SuSE 7.1. The "top seller" has a strong tie with the release cycle. When Red Hat 7.1 came out I bet Red Hat suddenly saw a jump in sales and market share too.
