All the think[pag laptop have light built into them? Sgood1971 09-18-2004, 10:12 AM I have a G40 for work. IT IS HUGE !!! 2.75" thick at the back (wedge shaped) and it weighs almost 10 pounds with the battery brick. It is a powerful laptop though with 2.8GHZ P4, 1024MB RAM and an 80GB HD. I really like it when I don't have to carry it anywhere. The only Linux I have tried on it is Damnsmall and it recognized everything easily enough. Can't give you a comparison though, sorry. CoffeeMan 09-18-2004, 11:50 AM If I were you, I would get the R50, it has a touchpad, and they are not too big or small. I personally have a Thinkpad A30 PIII 933mhz, and I like it a lot, but It is a too big, because it is old. It works wonderfully with Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris and Syllable/AtheOS. I have tried many Linux Distros on that machine, Like SuSE, Fedora(sucks), Mandrake, Slackware, Gentoo(briefly), Debian, and several Debian variants like KNOPPIX, MEPIS, ubuntu and Damn Small. IBM Rules! gamblor01 09-18-2004, 12:18 PM You can always use my IBM employee serial to check out the Employee Purchase Plan. If you want to send me your email, I'll send you an invite and you can check out the discounted prices (I'd rather not post my employee number and name out the internet for anyone). They invite us to use our discounts for friends and family so it's not like I'd lose my job or anything for it. In fact, the 3 employees with the highest sales each quarter get a free laptop themselves! Let me know your email and I'll send you a link, and you can check out all of the prices and laptops on there. The discounts aren't huge (typically between $100-$150) but if you want an IBM laptop anyway, I can help you get at least some of the money off...and some money off is better than no money off. Oh yeah, and if you're looking at the G40, make sure you get one with a P4 in it. The power consumption is more than a Celeron, but I've seen Celerons in action, and they're performance is pitiful. I had a 900 Athlon years ago that BLEW away my friend's 900 Celeron, and I've seen a 2.4GHz that performed like a 1.4....I'd stay away if it were my purchase. cozmo 09-18-2004, 03:53 PM I just bought a thinkpad T42P and it is great. Mine has a built in light at the top of the screen. I was never a big fan of IBM laptops unitl recently, but now I am convinced their quality and care is exceptional and their products (at least Thinkpads) are better than the competition. I also have some experience with their DB2 Universal Database, and their support is phenomenal. I forgot to mention that the G40 does not have a light. linuxprogrammer 09-18-2004, 05:07 PM The ThinkPad R50e sound like a better deal.Maybe i put red hat linux 9 .Does that keyboard light work if linux on it? justlinux.com
