I have a new install of gentoo on my laptop. If I boot up w/o ethernet, it takes really long until it fails. How do I go about backgrounding the DHCP broadcast like in knoppix?

stop start up of network devices and manually set it up, or have two boot images, one with network one without, i can't help with the actual way todo this, but just an idea

Find out which script starts dhcpcd during bootup. There's an option that it can take which tells it how long to wait before it times out. Probably -t. I'm not on my Linux box right now so I can't tell. man dhcpcd for more details. Set it to 5 seconds or something.
