I just got a school laptop with suse on it.
It had kde on it, I wanted gnome.
I went into yast and went to the selections option and checked gnome. a while later it did a suse configuration automatically for it. after this i should have had a nice gnome system.

Here are some pictures of what i got instead since i can't figure out how to take a screen shot nothing gnome looks right or works right.

I recreated my user so that default . files were created and then I deleted /tmp/gconf-username

fortunately i decided to do this early on and my configurations had not changed much.

it all works now.

its still related so i'm posting back here

when i try to switch themes I am told that

"default theme schemas could not be found on your system. This means that you probably don't have metacity installed, or that your gconf is configured incorrectly" now, I KNOW I have metacity installed.

if thta is the case, and the error is correct, gconf is buggered up. i honestly have no idea.

i found an article last night on one suse man's pains installing kde. apparantly kde needed to be installed in a certain order, the packages. maybe gnome is the same way. though the yast thing should take care of that problem for you...

sometimes a plain ole re-install is the easiest way to fix things. i'll G4L around and post anything I find.

if root is fine, then delete all your (username) home .gnome* and .gconf* files from ur home folder to make it default. delete other gnome user files as a user if it didnt work.
it may be a permisson problem too, but only if yast was buggy.

Problem solved

Never underestimate the brokenness of a release from an rpm distro. I updated however and all these problems are gone.

inconcieveable! it went back to its brokenness again this morning.

I have not even done anything to it!

New users have the same problem now too.

hopefully a mod or other guru will see this and be able to help.

have you tried suse's forums: http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/index.php

do you know anyone at school who is experienceing this? maybe there was a screwup from the yast install..
