This is a p3 550 with 320mb of sdram 100.

It has Suse 9.1, Gentoo and Fedora core2 and its purpose is to test out different distros before installing them on my newer computer.

A month ago i ran "emerge world" in gentoo, after ca 36 hours i noticed that the computer was frozen, no hd light, keyboard frosen and so on, i left it on for further 12 hours but no hd light blinking so i pressed reset.
Gentoo said: bad superblock, unable to correct try to fix manually. (Typed from memory) So my filesystem was ****ed up and i could not log in as root or user so i gave up on Gentoo for about a mounth.
3 days ago i installed gentoo again on this computer and it went fine upto emerging kde- frose solid when 30 packages were left, but kde was working kind of after that, i tryed meny times emerging the rest but computer froze after ca hour eavery time.

I came to the conclusion that this had to be a hardware problem but suse 9.1 had been working fine all the time so that seemed a bit strange.

What i have done allready is to go into bios (it shows how hot the cpu is running and voltage numers) it all looked good.

Then i opend up the computer (all fans were running), and changed the power supply. No change after that.

Then i changed the vga card, no change.

Then i ran "memtest86" from the fedora cd and after ca 20 min the computer was frosen.

I ran "memtest86" having only one memory stik in at a time and allways the computer frose after ca 10-20min. so probably not memory.

I removed soundcard and nic, so it is not them.

What is left? Motherboard or cpu.

I do have anoter computer with p3 450 processor, should i try to install it and see what hapens.

(I did a comptia a+ last winter for my self, i have no practical experience put am not scared of ripping computers apart.)

What flags do you have set when you compile. Are you using the standard flags or did you add on or change any of the CF flags?

"hard candy" thanks for the reply, i did a install just by the installasion handbook to the letter exept a " gentoo-dev-sources , kernel (2.6.8-gentoo-r3). And it did start up fine.

I'm suspicous of that memory though, the memtest should have finished without any problem,

Late last night i replaced the p3 550 procesor with a p3 450 from another computer i have and that one was missing hd and with little memory allready so no loss there.
I ran memtest86 and it did not freaze, after one pass i closed it down and started emerging the missing 30 kde pakages.

I just came home from work, and everything installed fine. Gentoo is fully installed and im happy
So it was the prosessor.
