Dear LNO people,
I am using a Red Hat 6.2 OS and 2.4.2 kernel with SB live! support compiled as a module.
Whenever I am root and using KDE 2.1 I hear the startup sound, but when I am a user I do not hear the startup sound. When I am a user or root I can still play mp3's etc. and there is sound. How do I fix this problem?

Try this
su to root
chmod 777 /dev/dsp
see if that fixes things.

I tried that but still the startup sound does not work. Although I can still play cd's or mp3's I get concerned whenever my Linux system is becoming a bit mysterious like what I have said in my previous post.
By the way, I installed KDE 2.1 from source. I do not trust rpms(sorry RedHat). The root still plays the startup sound. What I am wondering is that I have /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1. WHat are the differneces of these two? here is the info about my /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1 files.

slick is my username. Please give me enlightenment on this matter. I am sorry if I am bugging you with a problem involving a startup file.

It does sound like a permissions problem. Do a search for XMMS in General Linux Questions. I did this the other night when my XMMS wouldn't work...one of the articles gives a list of all things in /dev that should be chmod 777 'd in order to get your sound working well.
