So, I am having a lot of problem getting GAIM to transfer files to other AIM users. I'm really not sure where to start. Here's what's happening --

1.) I tell GAIM to send the file.
2.) The person I am sending the file to receives a file transfer request asking if it's okay and also asking where they'd like to put the file.
3.) After the person accepts the transfer, both clients just sit there and nothing else happens.

I'm very confused as to why this is happening. Here's my setup, though, in case this helps at all.

I'm running Shorewall (IPTables) as my firewall. I'm also using a router. Both are in their default setup. I have tried adjusting properties of one, or the other, or both, with no luck. This is even the case on computers that are behind my router.

Any help would be very appreciated.

to tell you the truth i may not be correct but i know that its very hard to direct connect with other aim users and file transfer doesnt work for me so its not only you and I think I read somewhere on like the GAIM site or sf or something about gaim not supporting aim file transfers and it only supports msn transfers im not 100% sure on this though

Does Gaim support file transfer?

Somewhat, yeah. As of 0.79 the following is supported:

* Sending and receiving files on AIM (although it might be a bit buggy)
* Sending and receiving files on IRC
* Sending and receiving files on Jabber
* Sending and receiving files on MSN
* Sending and receiving files on SILC
* Sending and receiving files on Yahoo (sending is limited to 1Mb)

Most of the protocols themselves support file transfer, but Gaim has not been written to support it yet. If you would like file transfer to work better or be more complete, get CVS and submit a patch using the generic file transfer API.

i just took that from the gaim site ... sorry for the double post... i hope that helps a litte

Okay, well, at least I know it's not my connection settings.

Thanks

if both of you are behind routers then you both need to make sure that you are reporting the correct ip address for the internet domain and that the one of you that is the server is able to open the assigned port. I did have it working for me but it ceased, this may be a bug or it may be me, a lot has changed. Check the gentoo bug database since you use that distro

You may have to enable your router so that it allows traffic through whatever port Gaim uses for file transfer. I'm not sure if your problem is the same as the one I had, but with mine (using aMSN) I had to setup a "virtual server" on my D-LINK; "Virtual Server is used to allow Internet users access to LAN services." It lets me schedule when this port is open to allow for file xfrs. Just check with the manual for GAIM to see what port you need to let it through. You then also have to tell shorewall to let stuff through that port also otherwise it still wont work. Hope this helps!
