I download the linux wireless driver for my PCI nic.

"linux-acu-driver-v21.tar.gz"

Then I try to install it.

Then a error appears indidcating the following below.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ldcmd ldconfig
Checking for libsigc++ ...
libsigc++ not installed.
Checking for gtkmm ...
libgtkmm not installed.

The libraries can be downloaded from the web.

Sources are available from sourceforge.net (projects gtkmm and
libsigc++). Be sure that you download the correct versions (1.2.10
of gtkmm and 1.0.4 of libsigc++). You must install libsigc++ before
you can install gtkmm.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I download libsigc++ 1.0.4 and gtkmm 1.2.10

I install libsigc++ with no problems ;)

I try to install gtkmm 1.2.10 and I get this message below
confused:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found
*** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to gtk-config.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I try to install the linux driver again just for the hell of it.

I get this once again

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ldcmd ldconfig
Checking for libsigc++ ...
libsigc++ not installed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now I am scratching my head, I can see it failing on gtkmm but libsigc++ installed perfectly fine.

I believe I might have a PATH issue

Can anyone help a Linux Brother out??

Thnanks

No one out here knows the answer to this?

Ok, let us know if you have Gnome installed (even if you are booting into another desktop, it will be enough to have Gnome installed). If not, which distro are you using and which version? This will let us know if some dependicies are taken care of.
And depending on the distro the PATH issue may be handled differently.

Yes Gnome is installed.

I am using redhat 9

# echo $PATH
/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/X11R6/bin:/root/bin

I hope some one can help soon. I really want to get my lnux box on wireless.

Thanks

Check the firmware on your cisco card. It should be
version 4.25.??

Version 5 and up will not work on Linux.

I downloaded the driver from Cisco.com for mine,
it worked perfectly on RH 9

I can't remember which driver, but the one you are
installing does't sound right to me. Check Cisco.

Not an expert on this, hope this helps.

cwillic checking the firmware on the card will require me to pull the card out and look at the chipset on the card right??

Where did you get your info about firmware 5 or higher not working on Linux. That is very interesting to know.

Thanks for your reply, I wll check the firmware.

I am still open for any more ideas from this forum.

If you have the aironet client utility installed you can
check the firmware with it. I believe it is under
status on the menu. If not, then you can check it
with windows, with the aironet client utility. I get
this information from Cisco and I can verify with my
own experience with this card. I believe you are
referring to the Cisco 350. If you have to change
the firmware, It can be done with the Aironet Client
Utility, but only from a windows machine. You cannot do it with Linux. I have ran both versions of
the firmware under windows and cannot tell any difference in performance.

cwillic I have downloaded the firmware and the cisco drivers. I wll move the card over to a winsuck box and upgrade or downgrade to the 4 2 5 firmware. Ok I have not done ths yet however I wanted to know, Did you do a full install of redhat 9.

I keep getting this when I try to install the driver

ldcmd ldconfig
Checking for libsigc++ ...
libsigc++ not installed.
Checking for gtkmm ...
libgtkmm not installed.

Like I indicated above I wll try to install the driver once again after I try the firmware trick you specified. Thanks I will let you know the outcome.

Try installing these two rpms to fix those dependancy problems

http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/sourceforge/z/zi/zinf/gtkmm-2.2.8-1.i386.html
http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/sourceforge/w/wi/witme/libsigc++-1.0.3-5.i386.html

Hey Icarus, good call..... I am at work, I will try as soon as I get home. I hope that does the trick or at least get me somewhere.

FYI , when I installed Red Hat 9, I already had the 4.25.** firmware installed. It automatically recognized the card and installed it. I did have to configure the IP , subnet and gateway, but it just
worked. Red Hat 9 is the only distro that I know of that will recognize this card on the distro install.

I later upgraded the firmware as per a request from my ISP, because of interferance problems and loss of signal. It didn't help, but the card would no longer work in Red Hat, so I re-installed the 4.25 firmware and Red Hat worked again. Sorry I cannot
remember the driver module, I am using SUSE now.

I have found it best to install all of the development packages on initial install, as this will eliminate a lot of dependancy problems later on.

Good luck.

I can not believe this crap. Same thing after I installed everything full installation of rh 9.

cwillic I also downgraded the firmware to V4.25 and nothing. Did not detect anything.

Make sure you have PCMCIA installed also. It does
not install by default. It will be on your Red Hat
disk. Do a search from your "add additional software" menu. Sorry I can't give you a step by step approach to this, it has been a while since I ran Red Hat. I know your frustration, been there. Don't
give up. I will dig through all my notes and see if there is something I am missing here.

Ok I had enough,

I learned IPTABLES on LINUX easier than trying to get this cisco card to work on RH9

Oh well I am going to move on to mandrake 10. I am a network engineer and our company is moving toward wireless solutions.

I want to play with AIRSNORT a little in the lab and see how well it works.

cwillic & Icarus, thanks for your help!

Off to mandrake 10

I never could get my card to work with Mandrake.

Maybe on Mandrake 10 you might. Why don't you try SUSE. it is a breeze to set up. No driver to install, just input your ip address etc and it works. You will have to install the aironet client utility separately if you want it, but it is not necessary. I am running SUSE 9
and have had no problems installing or running this card. If you go this way, install the Airo card as both
wlan0 and eth0 with same ip address and the "airo"
driver module. Set your lan card as eth1 and you will be set to go.

You were right, I got the same thing on mandrake. I have dowloaded SUSE 9.1 I believe and will be installing it today.

I sure hope this works. Gosh!!!!

cwillic

I am running Suse 9.0. It installs easily. Let me know if you need any additional help
wlan0 and eth0 configured the same
eth1 will be your second card.
wlan0 and etho will have ip address assigned by your isp with gateway assigned by isp. Driver module will be "airo" for both wlan0 and eth0
Don't forget to configure your DNS addresses to
whatever your isp assigned for this
eth1 ip address MUST be 192.168.0.1 with the other machines on your network using 192.168.0.1 as their gateway.
Enable IP forwarding if you intend to share your internet connection.

Good Luck

cwillic,

YOU THE MAN!

Hey I set up a SUSE box which is pretty nice by the way and my cisco aironet 350 is working like a charm. I did not install any utils from cisco however I am thinking about it. Hey Thanks man!!!!

I also set up a rh9,mandrake, and a slackware box on my network. I have never used slack and want to check it out.

I am digging this fast reiserfs file system. Very nice.

Thanks again........
