Hello again! Another laptop issue, this time with my Spanish girlfriend's Toshiba laptop, which is identical to mine with 2 exceptions, I use PC-2700 DDR SDRAM and have an 80GB IDE hard drive. Here is the scoop on specs:

Hardware Specs
System: Laptop
Manufacturer: Toshiba
Model: Satellite A15-S129
CPU: Celeron 2.4GHz
RAM: 512MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM @ 266MHz
Bus Speed: 400MHz
Chip Set: Intel 852GM
Hard Drive: 40GB IDE
Graphic Processor: Intel 855GM AGP 4X
Graphics Memory: 32MB Shared
USB: 2 - USB 1 and USB 2.0 ports
Parallel Port: Yes
Serial Port: None
Monitor: 15 in. XGA TFT Active Matrix
DVD/CD-RW: 8X DVD / 24X CD/CD-R - 10X CD-RW
OS: WinXP Home / SuSE 9.1 Pro 2.6.5.-7.108-default
Linux File System: ReiserFS

While booted into Linux the laptop performs reliable and operates at around 50oC. / 122oF, which is about where my laptop operates as well. But when she is not using the system, in other words the system is idle the CPU temp will skyrocket to 85oC. / 185oF or hotter and the CPU would spike to 99% and stay there! I ran top to find out what was causing this, and I have identified X as the source of the problem.

My system, which again is identical, including the software installed, has no problems like this at all. Anyhow, being a relatively intelligent young man, I reconfigured her X to match mine exactly. And, same problem is there! Hmmm okay so I went so far as to reinstall X completely... same problem.

So Gemma starts the blank screen saver and now the problem isn't there. What the heck is this all about? Any ideas? We are trying to figure out how to monitor CPU temp in her WinXP system to see if it does the same thing. But my fading familiarity with Windows is slowing the process down. I have almost zero WinXP experience but am pretty familiar with Win2K.

Here's the ticket: MotherBoardMonitor. I would advise keeping this file after install as the developer has called it quits after hassling with manufacturers more than reluctant to give up specs. Excellent application after setup.

Well it's a Linux thing for sure, WinXP doesn't do it. Any ideas anybody?

There are no custom tweaks to either kernel. Both are identical installs. Only difference is the other OS and she has a few more apps than I do.

If you installed the MB monitor software, compare the voltages in XP on both machines with the same processes running in "Taskmaster".

its her fault for being so 'hot'. :p

when the laptop is idle do you close the lid?
what kind of power management do you have going?
does it actually work?
have you seen it suspend at all?
does the colder laptop suspend?
what color is your car?
does your dog pee on the sidewalk?
do you have a dog?
