it would be mounted wherever /etc/fstab tells it.
How can i tell if he has rights to it?
the fstab entry will have something about ownership. also if it is mounted, a 'ls -l' on the mount point would list the perms and user/group information.
root, the super user, has rights to everything
post the relevant section of your fstab

If so there is your problem. Same thing happened to me with my USB pen drive AND ALL USB cameras. I could see them, they were in the FSTAB but even as root I could not enter the drive or read it.
Fix, revert to the origional kernel, problem solved.

to the default installed kernel. I refuse to update the kernel now for that reason as well as the VMWare issue.

I just thought of this..when you install suse yast gives you the option during the partitioning to create a mount point to different hard drives. I was not sure which drive was the external and which was internal. But it definintly have the option to mount to both drives. Because i didnt know which was which and i didnt want to swipe the external i unplugged it and started the install again so i did not have to deal with it. Could it be that i just need to create a mount point? Im tempted that since its a new install to just redo it now that i know which drive is which.
