unable to conect to pop host

I am using k-mail with kontact and sometimes when I check my e-mail I get the error "unable to connect to host pop "my e-mail address" this happens with both my freeserve and tiscali accounts.

Can anyone tell be what the problem may be, I can still access web pages and it doesn't happen all the time, I have tried pinging the server when it happens and it seemed ok?

Does Kmail give any indication of why it cannot connect?

No it just says unable to connect to host, it worked fine though when I connected tonight also I can't find any log entries but I am not sure where to look.
