I'm new to linux and just installed it (Saturday), but yesterday I wanted to have my mouse roller work so I editted the XF86Config and the Xsession files. I made the appropriate changes (see http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=004303) and since nothing happened I rebooted X. When I went to log on I type in my user name and password and instead of logging me onto Xwindows (either KDE or GNOME) it brings me to the log on screen again. I'm running Mandrake 7.2. I am able to login using the console. I was able to re-edit the 2 files i changed to reflect what they used to, but this didn't let me logon using Xwindows. Has anyone encountered this before?

Thanks,
Pat

well you learned rule #1, always do a cp file file.old to be able to go back.

Can you rerun Xconfigurator to see if you can redo the file? Make sure you save it first.

Well I'll try the cp file file.old right now and see what happens. If that doesn't work I'll have to run the Xconfigurator. How would I go about doing that. I very very new to Xwindows.

Thanks,
Pat

I think what soleblazer means is that you should make a copy of your configuration files before making any changes. In that way, you can always revert to your working configuratios if your tinkering doesn't work out. No offense and I don't mean to insult you, but just in case, the "file" in "cp file file.old" refers to the filename of your configuration file e.g. "cp XF86Config XF86Config.old" before making the changes.

To run Xconfigurator, type "Xconfigurator" at the command line in a terminal.

Hope this helps.

Hey thanks for the advice. I'll try running Xconfigurator and see what happens. Hopefully I'll be able to log onto Xwindows. Does it make a difference in your answers if I can log on under the console and then type in "startx" and then it works out ok. I'm just curious.
