how can you find the address of a HD before you have installed linux?

I don't understand the question. What do you mean the "address" of a HD?
If you have IDE hard drives, you will have 2 IDE controlers.
The master drive on the primary controller is /dev/hda, the slave is /dev/hdb.
For the secondary, they are /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd. The secondary is usually used for cdroms and cdrs.
