Uh. Been kinda fiddling around with planning a computer i will buy it in about a years time, when the prices drop and etc. etc.

so ya, enough with the B.S. heres what i got.

Lian-Li ATX mid tower "PC-v1100B" $250 (its so sexY!)
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-112-073&depa=0

2x NEC 8x Dual Layer DVD +/- $72x2=$144

2x WD Caviar 250GB 7200rpm $225x2 = $450 ( i will run in RAID-0)

2x Corsair XMS ECC Registered pc-3200 $385x2 = $770

IIYAMA Prolite E511S=B 20" LCD Monitor $889 (this monitors refresh rate and size excitees me!) lol.
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-172-057&depa=1

MSI "K8t Master2-FAR" VIA K8T800 chipset $220
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-436&depa=1

2x AMD Opteron 244 (1.8ghz) - Retail $339x2 = $678

Total: 3,400

by the time i get it, exactly a year from now, hopefully it will be in the $2,500 range.

About the gfx card, dunno if i will upgrade it, i have a 5900 right now and it is like, the greatest ever. Runs great, runs doom 3, awesome linux support. End of story. IFor the above parts i tried checking as much out on the linux HAL and the freebsd HAL, cause thats what i will be running. Want to run openbsd tooo, but it doesn't support dual procs as i last know. (openbsd would be key since i am in a dorm situation with shared net).

This box will be mainly used for multimedia, coding, my CS classes, running quiet and 24/7, compiling fast, storing a ton of movies, possible FTP server, and some gaming.

Feel free to lend your opinion.

That sounds like a kick *** comp man. shouldn't have a problem with any of that hardware. that mobo looks real nice. i have a msi and it's been a great board for me.

Sounds almost as good as my christmas present to myself...a shiney new PowerMac Dual 2.5 :^) With my ADC discount for having been a CS major (graduated) it knocks the price down about $600.

i'm defanantly liking the hardware spec of this, but the case...for that much you could find a less expensive tower with powersupply and have enough to watercool the system :) although it does look very sexy..check out geeks.com they have some nice deals on a dual xeon processor included mobo for like 300 bucks, anyway a nice system

(edited a comment on the raid reread and saw the sata stuff)

thanks for the comments. I was kinda wondering about the MSI, i haven't dealt with them before, but i can't find an ASUS (yet!) that gives me what i want. But apparently they work pretty good from what i have researched and fatTrav's comments.

about MAC's (since fattrav mentioned the powermac) uh...just wondering if it would be a good idea to buy some kind of MAC and install linux and freebsd on it. I am thinking against it for now unless there is some major reason why. Since i have everything i want, and i don't see any clear advantage of buying something that will cost me more for less...

side comment: i have read that openbsd does not support SMP, is this true?

The upcoming version of OpenBSD (3.6) will support SMP on x86/x86-64. As of now, though, it isn't supported. 3.6 should be out soon, but I forgot the scheduled release date.

By the way, why do you want 2 DVD burners? Couldn't you get by with a DVD burner and a DVD-ROM?

Oh, and with a RAID-0 array, don't forget your backups! :)

EDIT: Nice case!

honestly, i'd not buy a mac (unless it was an older one) to run anything but mac os on. i'm getting the powermac so i can have a decent machine and to run Mac OS X. OS X is the real reason I am gettin a mac and is everything I want in an operating system. macs are $$$ but well worth it in my opinion. os x is a dream to use...

btw, The Screen Savers used a MSI baord on their last Ultimate Gaming Machine ;)
