Searching's making me awfully confused...

I wanted to set up a "home wireless network" between my tower and my girlfriend's computer. Now, seeing as she's got one of those fancy new "windows" laptops with the built-in Wi-Fi (normal 802.11g), I thought- "Hey, wouldn't it be cool to set up something wireless for her at home, so that she can work somewhere (else) while I use the tower?"

I was thinking, because I have DSL, that I would buy a DSL modem/Wi-Fi gateway, to do away with my crap USB DSL modem (bastardly, but very thankfully, supported in Linux) hook an ethernet modem up to it and have the wireless come from there...

Then I was asking myself, "What if I just put a PCI Wi-Fi card into my tower and had _that_ run the wireless- sharing my connection with her and saving me money??"

Would this work? (Assuming the card is supported in Linux). How about this card. (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=37069&Sku=T156-2114)

Any help you might have would be great- and any huge problems ( i.e. "No, that doesn't work like that stupid") would be greatly appreciated.

If you need more info, I can try to explain again tomorrow...

Thanks!

The sort of wireless network you're talking about it commonly refered to as an "ad hoc" network. It's very much a possibility and shouldn't be to hard to do, but that's as far as I can get you because I've only ever set them up between Mac OS X and Windows. At the very least searching for "ad hoc wifi network" should get you somewhere.
