So...yeah...the only thing I DO NOT like about KDE is this damn Konqueror. It takes forever to load, eats up RAM, and is just a plain pain in the ***.

Is there some way I can change the use of Konqueror? I don't mean as the web browser - I use Opera for that. I'm referring to the use of Konqueror to browse files and other things like that. (It reminds me of the "Integrated Internet Explorer" in Windows.)

If you can help me get rid of it, I'll appreciate it very much.

I know this won't help you much, but I find Konqueror loads quick on my system. I always have 2 instances of Konqueror open, one for file management and the other for browsing.

Nobody forces you to actually use konqueror. There are loads of graphical file managers out there that are independant of konqueror.

Check out gtk file browser, kruiser and xplore on freshmeat.net for some relatively lightweight file managers with a win95 explorer look and feel. (Which imho is still a very clean and simple one)

I kind of like Konqueror. It loads just fine with me, but then again I may not notice it using a lot of memory because I have enough of it.

However, sometimes Konqueror hangs. Either it sits there and I can't click on any links or buttons, or it is minimized and won't come back up, or I close it but can't bring up a new one, and when I do a ps -ef and grep for konq (or something), I see that the processes are still running. I can't bring up a new one until I kill ones that are running.

Does anybody else see this behaviour? Is there a patch?

Thanks

Actually, yeah - that's my problem. Konqueror hangs. But, I'll take Joeri's opinion and find myself another file browser. (Or do it through command line.)

Try the ROX-Filer (do google search for rox).

Dude.. If you think konqueror is bad, give nautilus a try...

I used to hate konqueror also, so I started using gnome.. Then I met nautilus, and all of a sudden, konqueror seemed like my best friend.

I used konqueror with 64MB RAM until last week and it was a bit slow. I went and bought 256MB RAM and it now runs really fast.

Ram definitely makes KDE happy. I'm running KDE on a athlon 700 with 256 megs now, and it runs just as fast as windowmaker on my pentium II/233 with 128 megs right next to the athlon. As long as you don't touch the swap partition KDE is pretty darn fast.
