This is probably a stupid question, but since I don't currently have a DVD burner and don't know much about them or their filesystem I have to ask.

Before I go out spending money will linux be able to use a DVD burner than can write to 8.5 GB disks or should I stick to a 4.7 GB drive?

Specifically I was looking at this drive if anyone has suggestions.
Sony DRU-710A (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=DRU710A&Dept=cpu_accessories&CategoryName=cpu_Sony_PCAccessories_CD%2fDVDBurn_D VDBurners)

Thanks

From the K3b site:

Re: DVD-R Double Layer support
K3B supports dual layer burning since 0.11.13.
Of course you need a dual layer recorder, or a hacked firmware for your single layer recorder (there are a few out there, eg for NEC recorders). But have in mind that an unofficial firmware could create loads of problems, eg not being able to burn at all.

Re: DVD-R Double Layer support
my compliments to k3b + dvd+rw team.

fine burning of dl with hacked firmware liteon ldw-851@sohw-832 and verbatim media.

So I guess it does support it. I did not think it did, so I am surprised. (Now to look for some firmware
:) )

Thanks for the response. I would have said something earlier but my wife and I just got back from the hospital with our brand new baby boy. :-)
