Well, I just had a birthday and I was given a gift certificate to CompUSA (not my favorite store, but that's for another post sometime in the rants section)

I figured that I'd buy a DVD drive. I read over the DVD Howto at the Linux Documentation Project and they mentioned that most DVD drives would be supported under linux.

Does anyone have any advice on a brand to stay away from or a brand that you had no problems with?

Thanks!

It really depends, if you want multi region - any rpc-1 drive like Raite AVphile 108 are decent.

As far as new drives, stick to something quality, (stay away from the generic, no names also I don't like the creative labs stuff)

if you see any slot-loading drives - buy it, because there are a bunch of generic manufacturers using the same internals as the (i believe yamaha) and it is a solid drive. As of now there is only one maker of slot load dvd drive.

hope my ramblings help. I have the raite 108 avphile, and it is great.
