Well, the install for Progeny went smooth as hell but I now have a problem that's got me stumped. At first I couldn't log in at all at the login prompt. Reinstalled, now I can login as a user but not as root!
I can't get into the root account at all. Im sure I got the pass right. I can't even get in using $su in a terminal! wtf?
Anybody run into this with Progeny or Debian before? SOS :confused:

sorry, i cant help you for progeny. try this:
cat /etc/passwd is root listed in there? is there a long string of numbers/letters? (or if you are using shadowed passwords there would only be an 'x'). The normal debian install goes: setup base system, reboot, chooses root password and make users, chooses packages. did the installer go thru all of these steps?

Yes the install went through all those steps and it was using shadowed passwords. Could that be the reason why it locks me out. During the install you come to an option "use shadowed passwords (recommended)". Should I deselect this option?
I made absolutely sure that I got the passwords and user name correct but I could still only access the user account.
Is this a new downloaded iso or have you installed Progeny successfully with same?
I have installed Progeny a few times without having this problem (RC1-iso). I also selected "shadow paswords".
Could it be a bad burn or download?

I got this burned copy of Progeny from a friend. Maybe I should try installing with another copy. That would be interesting to see. I was thinking if this was a beta release than that might have somethin to do with it. "buggy" still.
I'm postin' this from Mandrake 7.2. :( :rolleyes:

They just released RC2 on the 21st. I am downloading it now and it will take me another day or so to get it.(slow modem :rolleyes: ) You may want to go and dl the RC2 of progeny.
have you tried booting to 'linux single' and changing the passwd?
